Safe Harbors, whose mission is transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts, purchased the old Hotel Newburgh in 2002 and turned the blighted eyesore into the Cornerstone Residence. Named Supportive Housing Network of New York’s “Residence of the Year” in 2007, the Cornerstone is home to 128 adults including the formerly homeless, veterans, those living with mental health diagnoses, artist and low income working adults in need of affordable housing. The project also includes the Ann Street Gallery, a contemporary arts venue, and the Ritz Theater Lobby, live performing arts space. The tours will highlight how Safe Harbors transformative supportive housing, award-winning contemporary art gallery and performing arts theater is instrumental to the revitalization of downtown Newburgh. Tours, which will last approximately one hour, will be held monthly on a rotating basis, the second Tuesday at 9am followed by the second Thursday at 4pm. Starting at 6pm on Thurday, May 9 at The Wherehouse, a specially designated keg of Cream Ale will be the Safe Harbors Brew of the Evening. Proceeds from each draft poured that evening from this tap will benefit Safe Harbors of the Hudson and their mission of transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts. Safe Harbors is playing a pivotal role in the overall cultural and economic revitalization of the City of Newburgh. This special draft will be available from 6pm until close (11 pm) at The Wherehouse, 119 Liberty Street in Newburgh. Dr. Sederer is Medical Director of the New York State Office of Mental Health, where he provides medical leadership for its 24 hospitals, 90 clinics, two research institutes and community mental health services throughout the state, serving 700,000 people annually. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia/Mailman School of Public Health and mental health editor for the Huffington Post.
