We closed out 2016 with a bang – a $500,000 grant from New York State for the planning, design and construction of a new roof on the historic Ritz Theater! Replacing the roof is the critical first step in stabilizing the building and laying the ground work for the next phase of the theater’s redevelopment.

In early 2017, we hit the ground running, assembling a team of architects, engineers and theater professionals to ensure we build a roof that is not only structurally sustainable, but is designed to support the wide variety of programming that will enliven the theater as we move this project forward.

This summer, we engaged individual performing artists, performing arts organizations, sound and lighting technicians, actors and educators to inform and advise how we can best create a multi-use, multi-venue space that is nimble, responsive, flexible and accommodating for dance, music, theater, film, recording and stagecraft instruction.

Safe Harbors is so excited to move forward with these partners and so many others to create a Newburgh-unique performance space with and for our community!

Watch for the cranes early this spring as we raise the roof on the Ritz and set the stage for community engagement, education, presentation and creation!
