SHOH's first project began in December 2002 with the purchase of the old Hotel Newburgh and began the process of transforming the run-down welfare hotel into safe, attractive, and affordable supportive housing.

New York State's Low-Income Tax Credit Program awarded SHOH annual tax credits of $1,438,966 for the next ten years. We are pleased to be the recipient of Newburgh's single largest tax credit award.

SHOH's Cornerstone Residence project is modeled after the highly successful work of Common Ground Community in New York City. Common Ground, the nation's leader in supportive housing, is SHOH's development partner.

SHOH has received additional grants from several partner organizations, including the State's Homeless Housing Assistance Program, New York State Department of Housing and Urban Development, Fleet Bank (now Bank of America), the Office of Mental Health, Corporation for Supportive Housing and the Daughters of Charity.

Beginning in 2002, Safe Harbors of the Hudson has restored the former Hotel Newburgh into The Cornerstone Residence. All residential units are being completely refurbished, with new materials floor to ceiling and new kitchens and bathrooms. In addition, we are restoring several common or public spaces: an art studio, a library, a computer room, and an exhibition space.
