Newburgh is the beautiful, crumbling city on the Hudson River not far from where we live in Garrison NY. The pictures are going to be published by W. W. Norton in September.

To coincide with the publication, I am planning an outdoor exhibition of mural size prints (4ft x 6ft) which will be displayed on the wall of the Ritz Theater in Newburgh. Through the online crowd funding website Kickstarter, I am today launching an appeal for contributions to help pay for this.

To see more of my photographs of Newburgh, go to In celebration of Earth Day and to inspire the community to help keep Newburgh clean and green, Safe Harbors of the Hudson is joining with the Newburgh community partners listed below for the City’s second annual Community Clean Up on Saturday, May 12. This is an opportunity for community members, young and old, to be a part of what’s great in the City of Newburgh. The cleanup will be held from 9:00 am-1:00 pm and a post-cleanup celebration will be held from 1:00-3:00 pm.

The cleanup efforts will cover the city from Clinton Street to Renwick Street and from Downing Park east to Colden Street. Safe Harbors is seeking cleanup participants of all ages. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should arrive no later than 8:30 am to the Broadway/Liberty Street Lot, adjacent to the Ritz Theater. Supplies will be provided to participants and Safe Harbors is seeking sponsors to donate items such as heavy duty trash bags and work gloves.

For more information about the event or to get involved, contact June Henley at (845) 562-6940 ext. 110 or //

/> Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site will once again be the location of the Newburgh Volunteer Fair. This is the second annual event, scheduled for Saturday, May 5th, from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Newburgh Free Library and Safe Harbors of the Hudson have partnered with the historic site to coordinate this program.

In 2011, 26 organizations took part in the Volunteer Fair! The day provided not-for-profit organizations an opportunity to raise awareness – community-wide – of the special needs that are met by their organizations. These organizations rely upon volunteers to assist in their endeavors. Representatives of these organizations will be available to sign up those individuals who wish to join their efforts.

All are invited to attend the Fair, visit the tables, and ask first-hand what these organizations are doing. There also will be tours of the Hasbrouck House, used by General and Mrs. Washington, during 16 ½ months of the Revolutionary War. Support from our sponsors has made admission to the Hasbrouck House free on this day, encouraging visitors to learn just how important a role Newburgh played during the War of Independence. Sponsors this year include Newburgh Brewing Company, SmileWorks, Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands and Palisades Interstate Parks Commission.

For an application for your organization to participate, <a

It is located at the corner of Liberty and Washington Streets within the city of Newburgh’s East End Historic District. The site is one of 35 historic sites within the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and is one of 24 facilities administered by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission in New York and New Jersey.
