A Special Silent Auction, Mini-Concert and Raffle Fundraiser

Date: Friday, April 12
Time: 6pm – 9 pm
Where: Ritz Theater & Cornerstone Lobbies
107 Broadway, Newburgh, NY

The public is invited to a special silent auction, raffle and free mini concert hosted by Safe Harbors’ Associate Director, Lisa Silverstone at the Lobby at the Ritz on Friday, April 12 from 6-9 pm. The event will help raise funds for MUSE–early music chamber ensemble for its two performances of “Be Glad Then America,” to be performed on June 22 and June 23 in the Lobby at the Ritz as part of Newburgh Illuminated, Newburgh’s city-wide celebration of Edison and the arts.

Auction items will include select pieces of the acclaimed artworks of Newburgh artist and musician, Jonathan Dobin, as well as several 18th and 19th century etchings. In addition, there will be refreshments, gift basket raffles, greeting cards and CDs for sale. The highlight of the evening will be excerpts from MUSE’s upcoming vocal, instrumental and dance music concerts.

Friday night’s artists will include a special introduction by Mary McTamaney, Newburgh City Historian, as well as: Suzanne Clune, soprano, Jennifer Ponzoni, mezzo, Robert Puleo, tenor, Jonathan Dobin, baritone, Lynn Cunnigham, flautist, Allan Plumb, clarinetist, Gordon Shacklett, cellist and a quest dancer, under the direction of Jonathan Dobin.

Proceeds from sale of the silent auction will benefit both MUSE- early music chamber ensemble and Safe Harbors of the Hudson.

MUSE’s performances are funded in part by generous grants from Arts in Orange, Orange County Tourism and the Estate of Nancy K. Stitt.

MUSE – early music chamber ensemble was founded by Jonathan Dobin in 1982 for the purpose of performing music of the Renaissance, Baroque and Early American Periods (through early 19th century) with vocal solos and ensembles, instrumental music and live period dance performances. The ensemble performed extensively throughout NYC and the tri-state area for nearly 10 years, garnering grants for pioneering reconstructions of early American music and dance – with Patricia Rader and Alan Tjaarda Jones. The group halted performances in 1992 after Jonathan Dobin recovered from a near-fatal accident. After moving to Newburgh his “new hometown” in 2006, Jonathan was encouraged to start MUSE again. In June 2010 he assembled an ensemble of some of the Hudson Valley’s finest singers, instrumentalists and dancers for MUSE’s first concert in the Hudson Valley – “Be Glad Then America” and “O Lovely Peace” in 2011, both fundraising events for Claudia Cumming’s Opera Company of the Highlands, which received critical and audience acclaim. The ensemble is unique for its mixture of music and dance and is the only group of its kind performing the early American repertoire in the Hudson Valley.

Safe Harbors of the Hudson is a Newburgh-based nonprofit organization whose mission is transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts. Safe Harbors encourages active Hudson Valley artists to live and work in the Cornerstone Residence and adjoining artist studio space. The organization supports its artist in residence with revolving art exhibitions in the Cornerstone Lobby and common spaces. Mr. Dobin has been an active artist-in-residence since 2009.
