Angelo Monge
In 2007, Angelo Monge needed a change in his life. He had a tough time in the Bronx and made the important decision to rehabilitate and start over in the Hudson Valley. One day, while temporarily residing at the Imperial Hotel, he was driving down Broadway and noticed The Cornerstone Residence building. The building made quite an impression and he vowed to himself, “I am going to live there one day.” And he did just that! After submitting his application and going through the interview process Angelo moved into The Cornerstone Residence in the fall of 2008. When asked about what appealed to him about The Cornerstone, several things came to mind. The promise of twenty-four hour security and a sober, healthy living environment were both very important factors to him. Amenities like the Cornerstone Library where he can check out books and movies was also a draw. Angelo’s life has since slowed down, much to his satisfaction. He has learned to enjoy the little things in life, fishing, reading, etc. He has learned patience and humility since becoming a resident of The Cornerstone. He has met many great people and forged positive friendships with tenant neighbors and people in the community.
During his time here, Angelo has helped out in the computer lab, watering plants throughout the building, and anything else he can do. In the winter of 2009/10 he was asked if he would be interested in learning new skills; sound and lighting for The Ritz Theater concerts. With instruction and guidance from staff at the Bardavon, Angelo first learned lighting and then sound control. He has now worked two complete seasons of The Ritz Theater’s Tom Humphrey Guitar Series and is anxiously waiting the next season. In addition to the guitar series, Angelo has worked sound and lighting for other musical and performance shows throughout the year like Ritz Kidz “Newburgh’s Got Talent!” Talent Show, The Amazing Kreskin, and local musician Richard McGraw’s concert. Angelo is so thankful for the opportunities he has been given at Safe Harbors and we are proud of how far he has come and how much he contributes to our “community” at 111 Broadway. Angelo sets a great example for us all, slow down and enjoy everything you do in life.
Transforming Lives and Building Communities…
Safe Harbors Salutes Angelo Monge
